Confession of the United States, Exam for the Islamic World
The Middle East Observer of the Indonesian Society for Middle East Studies (ISMES), Smith Alhadar, said the unilateral US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel was a test for the Muslim-majority countries, especially the Arab countries. What happens is a test of how the reaction of the Islamic world, which has been considered not fully united.
US President Donald Trump in early December made a controversial decision stating that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. He also plans to immediately move the embassy of the superpower that has been in Tel Aviv.
"It is possible and very likely that Trump's decision is to test how the reaction of the Islamic world and its reaction is very hard, even supported by many other countries in the world," Smith told Republika on Saturday (23/12).
The status of Jerusalem has become a major issue in the Israeli and Palestinian conflict. Israel occupied the eastern region of the city, previously controlled by Jordan during the 1967 Middle East War.
However, the Palestinians have seen East Jerusalem as the capital of their country in the future. This was also stipulated in the 1993 Oslo Accords, which were later confirmed in the Israeli and Palestinian peace talks.
The two-state solution is one option to end the conflict with two countries for two citizens. With that, Palestine will become an independent state in areas that have been disputed, namely the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem. Thus, Palestine will be a country co-existed with Israel.
During this time, according to Smith many Arab countries are not focused or override the Palestinian and Israeli conflict. Instead, they see more problems with Iran that are considered threatening the regimes of the governments of many Arab Gulf countries and Middle East security.
"At first I saw that Arab countries, like Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt wanted to put aside the Palestinian issue, but now they can react strongly to Trump's decision," Smith .
