The recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel 'will cause turmoil' in the Islamic world
US intention to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is expected to cause turmoil in the Islamic world.
If the plan really materializes, then America will also move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
There has been intense speculation that President Donald Trump is expected to announce the recognition in Wednesday's speech as part of a pledge for the 2016 US presidential election campaign.
During the campaign period, Trump showed strong support for Israel and even promised to order the transfer of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on the first day he was officially in office. But until now he has not fulfilled his promise.
Palestinian hope is lost
Opposition to the idea of recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has been opposed by many because it is expected to create a new conflict.
"East Jerusalem is very important not only for Palestine but also for the Islamic world because there is Al-Aqsa Mosque which is believed by the Muslims as the place of Prophet Muhammad to the heavens or mi'raj of Prophet Muhammad to the sky," explained observer of Middle East problem from Indonesian Society for Middle East Studies (ISMES) Smith Al Hadar.
"So it will also affect the Islamic world if it recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moves its embassy to Jerusalem then the Palestinian hope of establishing the Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem will be lost."
The reason, continued Smith Al Hadar, Israel will get legitimacy from the United States to speed up what he calls 'yahudinisasi' in East Jerusalem and could be the remaining Palestinians in the old city will be removed from there.
"So Jerusalem as a whole will be the capital of the Jews, and in terms of security will be more assured if the Palestinians are not there anymore," he said in an interview with BBC Indonesia correspondent Rohmatin Bonasir on Monday (04/12).
Indonesia's concerns
The news of President Trump's possibility to announce the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel suddenly sparked opposition from various parties.
Jordan's Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, warned of the emergence of 'dangerous consequences' if the US recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
In Jakarta, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi summoned US Ambassador Joseph R Donovan Jr. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi expressed Indonesia's concern over the possibility of recognition.
Retno also said "the plan will threaten the Israeli-Palestinian peace process."
The Arab League states that the Arab countries' organizations are monitoring the situation closely.
"The move will not create peace or stability, but it will nourish fanaitism and violence," Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.
Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is trying to rally international support to convince Donald Trump to abandon his wishes.
The support of Islamic countries, according to Middle East observer Smith Al Hadar, is needed by the Palestinians in the midst of understanding.
"The Muslim sentiments around the world are bound by the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem so that the Palestinians have no power without the help of Islamic nations around the world so hopefully the United States may Donald Trump cancel the plan."
He added that the Islamic world is expected to reach an agreement to oppose the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Palestinian leaders have earlier said that recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel would threaten the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a two-state solution.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem since the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in 1980. Israel considers the historic city its territory.
But under international law, East Jerusalem belongs to the occupied territories.
